Economic Impact of Military Assets

The Southeast region is home to several military facilities and activities. Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) New Orleans (Belle Chasse) is located in Plaquemines Parish. NAS JRB directly contributes over 6,300 jobs and over $338 million in spending to the economy.

US Coast Guard, 8th District, has multiple offices and operations in the region, including the 8th District headquarters in the New Orleans central business district, the Coast Guard Air Station at Belle Chasse, and the New Orleans sector office at Federal City in New Orleans. Coast Guard operations directly contribute over 1,700 jobs and $165 million in spending to the state economy, most of which occurs in the Southeast region.

Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES) headquarters is located in Federal City in the Algiers district of New Orleans. MARFORRES employs nearly 3,000 active and reserve military, civilians and contractors, most of whom are in the southeast region, with annual expenditures of $156 million. Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SPAWAR) occupies two office buildings in New Orleans near the University of New Orleans. SPAWAR contributes over 750 jobs (including contractors) and $84 million in spending to the economy.

The Southeast region has a significant Louisiana National Guard presence accounting for over 3,800 personnel (including over 1,100 located at Belle Chasse) and $148 million in spending.
